Nie Huaisang drifted through the crowd at the cultivation conference. He clutched his fan tightly and kept an anxious, lost expression on his face. The Headshaker knew nothing. No one turned to look when he passed; no one guarded their words in front of him.

Traditionally, Nie sect leaders and disciples were strong cultivators, physically powerful, mighty wielders of the saber which shortened their lifespan. Nie Huaisang was none of those things. But perhaps, he thought, carefully sifting through the whispers and rumors—some of which he’d started—he was the one who embodied the family name best after all.
