“…I overheard you call your wife ‘your beloved magpie,’” said Holmes in the gentlest tone I’d ever heard him use.
The old man’s eyebrows rose sharply, but there was recognition in his eyes. “She doesn’t steal, not really. She doesn’t even know what she’d doing. She hasn’t been herself for a very long time.”
“I’m not here to bring any trouble upon her,” continued Holmes. “But in this case, she has picked up something which belongs to someone, something about which they won’t be scrupulous in the manner of retrieval. May I see your magpie’s nest?”
“Come. She has several.”
