Inspector Lestrade escorted Dr Watson into a nearby pub, saw that he was seated and went to buy two pints of beer.

“Drink this,” he said, “before you do anything else.”

Watson drank about a third of the beer before putting the glass down and saying, “How dare he?  ‘It’s only a street sweeper.  There are others to do his job.’  No, that man’s life was in danger.  I was treating him first.”

“And because of you he will live.”

“Thank you for bringing me in here, before I hit that arrogant personage.”

“It stopped me from doing so, too.”
