Summary: Some change the course of events with the sword, some with the pen. Rebecca has her skill at cooking.


Jacob has always loved to watch his mother cook. Her hands deftly slice meat and vegetables, dip into the jars of spices to scatter just the right amount into a dish, pull out a fragrant round of bread. It is like a kind of dance.

She takes the young goats he brings her, and sets to work without hesitation. As if she discovered long ago how to make goat taste like wild game.

“How—?” Jacob is not sure what he is asking.

“I had a dream,” Rebecca replies calmly. “If the Lord sends you a dream, my son, remember it.”
