"You're quite sure Mrs Forester was blackmailing people,” Inspector Slack said dubiously.  “Yet we can find no proof she was ever alone to ask for the money.”

“That was why she was so clever,” Miss Marple replied.  “Her fortune telling was an accepted part of village life, not something I held with, of course, but I witnessed it.  She would deal out the cards, and then she’d point at a diamond, and if it was the two, her victim had to pay twenty pounds, the six would mean sixty.  All done by sleight of hand.”

“No wonder you alone noticed!”
