They’d made promises to each other in their marriage vows, forty years ago now.  Had he meant them, even then?  She supposed it was possible, but in reality there had never been much evidence of that even in their first years of marriage.  At the time she’d meant her promises, but was she obliged to keep them, when he had so clearly broken them first?  Of course she’d promised things to her children when they had been born, to love and care for them.  But did they have the right to hold her to her promises now they were adults?
