The piano was mocking him. The world was on fire, and she begged to be played, to stir humanity with a tune that called to action and gave hope.

He felt dry inside, empty even, as the horrors merely pounded through his veins instead of the tempo of an anthem. What good was he, a bard of the modern age who could not find the whisper of a song to help?

Richard closed the keys, and turned instead to his desk, where a pristine sheet lay waiting for the notes.

The stanzas remained unfilled, his heart failing his oathbound call.
