Generosity; attentiveness to others’ needs. Misty knew that these were some of the sure-fire ways to strengthen friendships. She’d remembered what everyone at the table had been drinking and ordered another round.

When she got back to the table, though, she found that Jackie had taken her seat. Misty felt like she’d stepped into a game of musical chairs or duck, duck, goose. Games she always lost.

She set the drinks on the table; no one noticed or thanked her. Misty lingered awkwardly beside the table until Walter’s voice suddenly filled her ear.

“There’s a table for two over there.”
