Since John was not working that day, he was taking Rosie out in her pushchair, having promised her they were going to see the ducks.  Sherlock, apparently at a loose end, went too.

They reached the lake and Rosie said, “Duck!”

“That’s right.”

“Duck!”

“And another one.”

“Goo!”

“Try again!”

“I think you’ll find, John, what Rosie is saying is ‘goose’.  And that is a goose,” Sherlock said.  “What’s that?” he asked, pointing at a larger bird.

“Wan!”

“Correct, a swan.  We’ve been coming here on a daily basis while you’ve been at work this week.  She’s making excellent progress.”
