The logs rumbled into the box beside the woodstove. In the glow of the fire, Laurie could see Jo’s brow and neck glistening. His eyes darted back to his book before she caught him looking.

Laurie looked up from his book when he heard the door open, but he didn’t get up. For all her grunting as she lugged the firewood inside, he knew from experience that Jo would only be insulted if he asked if he could help her. Besides, he’d seen her arms under her thin shawl last summer–she’d become more muscular than him since moving to Plumfield.
