Buffy sat on the cot where Spike was lying still, staring at the ceiling. She caressed his cheek, where it’d been burned by a cross. “I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“Don’t,” he said ruefully. “I murdered his mother, I got off easy.”
“Vengeance ain’t justice,” she said softly. “But I’m sorry about the part played by Giles. He had no right.”
Spike sat up, holding his knees to his chest. “Reckon he’s trying to protect you.”
“By killing off my best fighter?” she hissed. “No. He’s questioning my judgment, and that’s… I don’t know who I can trust anymore. Except you.”
