Miss Roach had been asked by her boss to deliver a packet to one of their customers. Initially he’d suggested she do it during her lunch hour, but then agreed she might take longer in order to have time to eat as well. Miss Roach took the bus to her destination; the boss having given her the bus fare. Ordinarily she would have walked, for it wasn’t far, but she saw no point in spending more time on the errand than necessary. But she would walk back, for the bus fare would cover a pudding to go with her meal.
