Buffy let out a resigned sigh.
Sleep was stubbornly eluding her and if by chance she happened to doze off, her rest was haunted by dreams where she was running aimlessly toward the unknown. Was it their victory or a crushing defeat that awaited her? She wouldn’t know, because she always tripped and fell to the ground, exhausted, before hitting the target. They were in a race against time in their unbalanced war against The First, but so far every effort had seemed vain.
Absently, she caressed Spike’s arm where it lay across her waist. What would their future hold?
