Things would have been different, had this been an entertainment. Breq would still have reprimanded Seivarden, yes, but midway through, she would have hesitated. Drawn a breath. Seivarden can see it, in her mind’s eye. “Lieutenant,” Breq would say next, “You shouldn't have risked yourself.” Paused again. “I’m glad you did.”
“Fleet Captain,” Seivarden would respond, emotion leaking through the cracks in her voice. “I had to. You saved my life too, once.” And everything between them would have changed, after that.
But this wasn’t an entertainment. It was only Seivarden’s life, and Breq had said nothing of the kind.
