It was late on a dark and stormy night when Sherlock reached the thirteenth step of the flat and found what he had expected to find: John sleeping in his armchair, what he’d been reading resting on his chest.

But as Sherlock moved closer, he was mildly surprised.

There was a carefully stapled print-out of Sherlock’s own monograph on tobacco ash rising and falling with John’s even breathing.

“The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak,” whispered Sherlock with undisguised fondness.

Then he removed the print-out and replaced it with a dog-eared Agatha Christie novel and went to bed.
