“Is Hopkins not here?” Holmes asked when he entered our rooms.  “I had assumed he would arrive before me.”

“Not yet,” I replied.  Then we heard someone knocking on the front door.  “That may well be him.”

It was, and the young inspector soon joined us.  He greeted me politely before taking a seat.

I looked critically at him.  “You’ve been injured,” I said.

“A mere scratch,” he replied.

“Inspector, I have lived with Holmes for many years, there is no point in pretending that you have not sustained an injury when clearly you have.  Let me look at it.”
