He’d been so excited to leave his home town; never before had the opportunity or means to travel outside his own state.  The sea voyage over hadn’t been fun, but he’d made several new mates who’d shared his woes.  And now he was in Europe, in a place called Hollenrath, in the country of Belgium, which a few months ago he couldn’t have found on the map.  It was bitterly cold, the wind was icy, and everywhere he looked there were trees.  He huddled down into his foxhole and thought sadly of the folks at home, making their Christmas preparations.
