“But why,” Inspector Japp asked, “if his father had only about six months to live, did Gaskell decide to murder him?”
“It was a question of inheritance,” Poirot replied.
“Surely there was no indication the will would be rewritten?”
“Ah, no. But the will said the estate should be divided equally between all Gaskell senior’s children and grandchildren who were alive at the date of his death.”
“All legitimate children, if I remember rightly.”
“Correct. But Gaskell’s younger daughter was pregnant, and her brother had no wish to see the inheritance split any further, especially as she was expecting twins.”
