Beth looked down at Judith. The baby looked so untroubled, even smiled in her sleep. As if the world around her was still intact.
Maybe it was, for her. Everyone cared for her. Yesterday even Daryl had carried her around, whispering in a soft voice. She didn't miss anything. Didn't know about the cruelty of life. Thought it would be like this always and forever.
Gently Beth put a finger on her warm cheek. No, there was no reason to envy her for her unawareness. The day would come, much too soon, and also Judith would have to face reality.
