Summary: One Charles prepares to welcome another; the lingering spirit of Charles V will grant refuge to his grandson.


Charles remembers waiting in the darkness of Charlemagne’s tomb, as a band of conspirators swore to take his life; he remembers emerging from that tomb to confound the traitors. He remembers, too, invoking the noble spirit of Charlemagne: More than your name, I want to share your virtues.

In his last years, he voluntarily laid aside crown and scepter for the peace of a monastery. Now he lingers here in the shadow of his own tomb, doing penance for his pride.

It is time to grant refuge to his grandson, another who shares his name; Carlos too will find peace.
