He has almost forgotten names, and language, and everything human. He lives like a wild beast among the beasts, listening with wary ear for the hunters. With every dawn, the woods are becoming more trap than refuge, and the twisted vines have more thorns to catch at fleeing feet. He sleeps in wolves’ dens or on exposed cliffs where eagles nest; he silently endures wind and rain and cold, belly pressed to the earth. Sometimes he feels a sharp ache in his chest, and he whines softly like a lost hound; he does not remember that it is called loneliness.
