‘You will learn to laugh again,” Sister Monica Joan had told him, but Tom Hereward wasn’t convinced.  Even when he might have had cause to laugh, in his head he could hear Barbara’s laughter and every time that brought him up short.  The loss of his beloved wife, who would never laugh again, was more than he could bear.

Yet slowly he found himself smiling.  The innocent words Reggie shared of good times they’d had.  The smile Angela Turner gave when her big brother twirled her round.  The warm greeting from Violet Buckle.  Little things which slowly made a difference.
