I hurried into the room and bent over the woman who was crumpled on the floor.

"How is she, Watson?" Holmes called.

"She's still alive," I replied. "I can feel her pulse. It's faint, but we have made it in time. Did Vanburgh get away?"

"He won't have got far. Lestrade has his men stationed outside."

I slid my arm under the woman and helped her to sit up to ease her breathing.

"Charles," she muttered. "Please..."

"It's all right, you're safe now."

"But why?"

I stayed silent. It wasn't my role to tell her the truth about her husband.
