Thin cables fall off the examination table as Kafka shuts down outside alimentation sources. A minute passes, turns into an hour. Kafka sighs, the body needs to be self-sufficient. Shame. This one was pretty, she designed it herself, grey hair and big eyes on a doll face.

She caresses it one last time, then she feels it. Unmistakably organic within the monotonous hum of the machinery, the beating pulse she took many times before, the pulse of life. She smiles as it grows beneath her palm, in sync with her own.

"Hello, little one," she says to the golden-eyed girl.
