"Are you all right?" Sherlock Holmes asked. "You're looking very thoughtful."

"What? Oh, after a fashion," Watson replied. "I've just been reading this article by some Brigadier talking about the honour of the regiment." Watson raised his newspaper.

"Easy enough to say from some miles behind the lines."

"Exactly. Hopkins doesn't say much about the war, but while he talks of the camaraderie between the men, he's never once mentioned honour."

"Not even that of serving one's country?"

Watson snorted. "The idea of honourable conduct in war went out with the medieval knights, and their honour was dubious at times."
