The king waited with mingled impatience and dread for the coming of winter, when the road would open. Once he returned his lady to the sunlit lands, his word to her would be fulfilled. He would be free to court her then, with all the honor she deserved. Yet she could choose to stay there with her family, to leave him forever.
As the queen used her high magic to heal the kingdom, to call forth new saplings from the earth and stretch their food supplies until winter, he hoped—he could not help hoping—that she would choose him.
