The quick pounding of Buffy’s heart echoed in her ears as she approached Spike in the dimly lit school basement.
Crouched in the shadows, he muttered incoherent fragments of sentences to himself, like the other time she’d met him.
“Spike?” she called softly.
He flinched at the sound of her voice and sighed. “I found rat skulls yesterday. And droppings.”
“What?”
“I ate them. The rats,” he whispered, his voice trembling. “They made me do it.”
“Who?”
“All of them,” he whimpered.
Feeling powerless, Buffy watched him clutch his head and sway on his feet, seemingly bereft of all sanity.
