"What happened?" I snapped. I was probably unreasonably sharp, but the sight of Inspector Hopkins limping towards me, assisting a wounded constable and being followed by another who had blood dripping down his face, had seriously alarmed me.

"The wall crashed down on us as we got into position," Hopkins replied. "No, Doctor, leave me, see to Charlton first."

I turned my attention to the constable. "And Holmes?"

"He was behind us. He's overseeing the rescue. He sent me back to you." Hopkins was turning very grey.

"Yes, because you need urgent help too. So let me take a look!"
