Her father beckoned Tikaz into his chambers and closed the door carefully. “Is the lord Mawat still—” He tilted his head towards the square outside.
“Yes,” Tikaz said shortly.
“Did he say anything to your offer?”
“You mean your offer?”
“Tikaz.”
“He’s not a child, Father. You can’t bribe him with a sweet.”
Radihaw shook his head. “Why must he be so stubborn?” he said fretfully. “He should know that no good will come of defying the Lease.”
“I advised him to behave with more patience,” Tikaz said truthfully. Though not for her father’s sake, and certainly not for Hibal’s.
