He knows he is dying. The spring wind is melting him slowly, but as surely as any fire. He is shut out of his kingdom, while the demon rages within it and his people are without their king’s aid. For their sake, he must endure as long as he can. He breathes shallowly, using the last of his power to preserve his inner core.

His eyes have gone blind with snowmelt. In the darkness, in the deadly warmth, he holds on to the sound of his lady’s voice, as she and her family strive to work a magic beyond hope.
