Mahar looked up from the document he'd been reading. He knew Bernavas had gone to find food. He hadn't expected him to return that quickly or with the spread he had.
It was fine; they'd have leaner times ahead. Mahar set the letter aside and took the plate that was offered.
He'd nearly forgotten how keen an observer Bernavas was.
"Thank you." He meant it. And he reached to eat, aware that Bernavas was waiting for him to go first.
Habits were hard to break.
And some things needed done now, beyond revenge and beyond ambition.
Together, they ate.
