Summary: During Chernobog's attack on the mountain, Flek tries to protect her daughter and all the children.
When the high, clear bell sounded its warning, Flek dropped her tasks and ran to find her daughter.
Women and children were gathering in the grove of white trees where the cold was strongest. For once, rank did not matter; bondswomen pressed shoulders with ladies, making their bodies into a shelter for all their children.
Flek could feel the melt trickling down her face, her fingers and toes. The frost was shrinking; the very trees began to droop in the fearsome heat. Something unimaginably terrible must be happening outside the mountain. She forced down her terror and held her ground.
