Her son dies at twenty-three, which is not old enough. A gift of parenting ought to be the sparing of that grief.
She kneels by the living room alter and guides Sayu’s hands towards the incense. The tip glows red; she blows out the flame. The smoke spirals upwards. It smells woody.
It is unclear that Sayu knows what they’re doing.
She watches the smoke rise. Sayu does not.
Something cruel unfurls in her: she is jealous of her daughter, who does not speak, who might not know. Sachiko will know until she dies.
She exhales. She buries the thought.
