Farewells are always hard.
The Doctor comes to love them all, the people he travels with. He carries each and every one with him, lodged deeply within both hearts.
He'd love to keep one or two with him for the ride, for always. For someone to finally be able to stay with him, for a change. Instead of either dying, or moving on with life.
But their lives are so much more limited than his own. Far more fragile. Nothing is forever. There is no such thing as for keeps.
The Doctor knows it.
If only it didn't always hurt.
