The sword in his hands had been his father's before him. His mother hadn't wanted to let him take it - not out of any sense of sentimentality over the heirloom but because she did not want her son to suffer the same fate as her husband. It was the Kingdom's tradition, though. If he didn't go to the training ground and learn to fight monsters, he would be ostracised by everyone in town. He was a thoughtful and wise boy. He wouldn't blindly rush into battle. Maybe one day he would even put a stop to all the madness.
