“I know how much you love the water,” the siren croons. “You’ve made your life on it. The greatest sailor of your generation.” She holds a baby boy who kicks his feet in the waves and looks so real. “Look how our son takes after you. Won’t you join us?”
This Odysseus squeezes his eyes closed, concentrating on the feel of beeswax in his ears. Sirens lie. He knows himself: he has fought tooth and nail to be who he is against his fear of the ocean; he loves his daughter more than his own life. He knows his truth.
