Miss Marple smiled and opened her door when she heard someone knocking. She was always pleased to welcome the church carol singers and at once brought out the two plates of mince pies which she had waiting on the hall stand. She particularly appreciated that, unlike the choir, which required a certain standard, anyone could join the carol singers and was made welcome by the choir master, despite the occasional dubious note or two. When they asked her which carol she would like, she knew immediately and requested 'O Little Town of Bethlehem', and joined in with the familiar words.
