Buffy stood alone, watching Spike’s retreating figure.
A cold shiver ran down her spine, not from the chill in the air, but from the sharp sting of regret. She had pushed him away again, and he’d purposely showed up with a skanky plus-one in order to hurt her. And the worst part was… it had worked.
She’d always tried to dismiss and ignore the importance of Spike’s presence in her life, to the point of stubborn denial, but now…
Buffy’s heart clenched with the alarming realization that Spike mattered to her more than she cared to admit, even to herself.
