Inside, cradled in black satin: an engraved watch, delicate script on the back beneath the Mélodis symbol.
“The family values results. As do I.”
He never missed: microscope components, access credentials, a leather notebook, a fossil insect in amber, subtle fragrances… Each grew more personal, yet they were always only rewards.
Luchino couldn’t decide what to think of these quiet offerings; he never got to ask. Noir wouldn’t come again. Not tomorrow. Not next month. Not ever.
