Never once faltering or pausing, Luchino’s life had been ceaseless motion: brutal expeditions, sleepless lab nights, paper after paper.

Now, by the lake, the momentum had died. 

Iron reeked the air, cloying on his tongue. Rigid, he refused to look down. He no longer trusted his nerves. The foreign chemistry seeping through his veins knew nothing about mourning. If he looked, hunger might uncoil where sorrow should have gutted him.

Fight was over. Flight would be demeaning.

So, Luchino remained frozen while blood, viscous black under moonlight, pooled in the dirt around the young man’s body, creeping toward his shoes.
