"Ah, but no, mon ami, it is an old, old trick," Hercule Poirot said. "Let me show you."

"You won't fool me," Inspector Japp replied.

In answer, Poirot placed a small pencil on the table and instructed Japp to take a good look at it. Then, he himself picked the pencil up, examined it and put it back down. "I have replaced the pencil with another," he said.

Japp laughed, but nevertheless picked the pencil up. His face fell. "Very clever, Poirot. The first one was an HB, this is an H."

"As I said, it is an old trick."
