There are times when the death of a loved one may be termed a release, when they have been suffering and are at last at peace. This was not one of those occasions. Holmes, who having had his suspicions when he heard of the pawnbroker's death, had taken me along in case there was any doubt. As it was, this was unnecessary, since the man had been stabbed with a carving knife, the name of the woman who had pawned it tied to the handle. The man had been widely hated, the list of potential suspects would be very long.
