The garrison waited for the relief party.  At first the siege had not seemed too harsh, and the relief was expecting any day.  But gradually, as the number of days lengthened, anxiety grew.  Had their message requesting help not got through?  They knew it had, for an acknowledgement had been received.  Slowly they came to suspect the relief party must have been attacked and driven back, but still they took comfort that a strengthened relief party would be sent.  They did not know their headquarters had been razed to the ground and the troops, those who hadn’t been massacred, scattered.
