Before he left for good, he made lion hunting illegal unless the hunter could prove the lion was preying on cattle. He had a connection with lions, they said. Plied with a drink, he could be persuaded to talk about the time he was made an honorary member of a lion's pride after saving the alpha's favourite cub and heir to the title of pack leader. Help was better received back then, he said, there was less intrigue, less backstabbing, and problems usually stayed fixed without horrible, horrible complications. Less popular was his proclamation that goats were not for eating.
