His mother's smell came back to him now, running through this endless sunflower meadow.
You're home at last. Your mother's here, and your brother too, probably. You're so tired but now you can sleep. Just close your eyes and come to me, take my hand, join your family...
But he woke up when the lurching motion hit him. He was falling, fast, and he finally struggled, his survival instinct, impossibly, still kicking in.
The townspeople had saved him. They'd known where to go, where to put the haystack, led by her in collective dreams.
He forced himself to thank them.
