Mary Watson thanked the maid who had brought in the tea tray.  A recommendation from Mrs Hudson, she had anticipated the need without being asked.  Mary poured the tea and passed a cup to her visitor.

“Tell me what’s happened,” she said.

The story her visitor had to tell was one she had heard before; a husband unable to cope and unwilling to confide in his wife, believing she needed to be protected.

Mary nodded, saying she understood how hard it was.  For many that was all that was needed; for a few there was further encouragement to act themselves.
