"Shit, you're burning up." Rinkah pulled her palm away from Setsuna's forehead, glaring at her with an expression like a knife. "Why didn't you tell me?"

Setsuna blinked and considered this. "I feel fine, though?" she said vaguely, looking like she would topple over in the breeze, and Rinkah knew she wasn't fine at all.

Grateful now that she always ran hot, Rinkah draped her cloak over Setsuna's shoulders and scooped her into her arms. Setsuna curled up against Rinkah's chest and murmured contentedly.

"You know, you're really warm, Rinkah. Are you sure you're not the one who's burning up?"

Title: Fevered
Original
Rating: T (but I'm being cautious)
Notes: I'm completely new to Dreamwidth—I apologize in advance if I get this wrong!

The ideas burned in him like fever: new furies, new countries, new monsters to kill in all the old ways. We would burn this place down and build a new one from the ashes—ashes (he told me) could be used to make cement. Could be used to clean glass til it shone. It burned in him, burned in all of us—

Burned like fever. And broke like fever too, passing from one moment to the next from haze to dizzy clarity. When you wake to sweat and memory, knowing now what it feels like to be able to be warm.

You’re focussing on the symptom, little sister. Look for the disease.

Take in city-fires, heatflash silhouettes on cracking concrete, air thick enough to swim through – then look up.

Skim the storeys, to save time. Punch-clock routine and punch-clock comforts, then someone pulls the clock apart to rework the wiring. Breezes set to circulate bliss, bare feet on marble, glitter-eyed mermaids in the water. Fat, fleshy gardens, I hear. Fruit ripening to rotten.

Pretend you can look up to see the lights. Prayer-capsules and god-engines, encoding wishes and wants. Satellite smitings from orbit.

Then look up

Ah. Now we’re getting somewhere.

Shaw cradles the receiver and fishes for a pen, but the message is short.

"Please. Wait."

"…okay," says Shaw, and watches pedestrians.

"Unable. To. Connect," says the Machine.

Shaw restrains herself from punching the payphone. "Just tell me where you need me to be."

The address is across town, in an ASI dark zone. Root's slumped next to a payphone, eyes glazed and forehead dripping sweat. Shaw can see her pulse racing, her shirt crusted to her shoulder with old blood.

"Shaw?" she croaks, as if this can't be real.

"It's okay," says Shaw, dragging her upright. "We found you."

“So, like, when did you know you were gay?” Dev asked, leaning back against the side of her bed.

Denise shrugged. “I don’t know. I mean, I guess I always knew.” She glanced at her posters. “Look around you, Dev.”

“Good point.”

“If I had to say one moment when I figured it out, it’s when Kara smiled at me in gym class. I felt like I was on fire. Like I was nervous but so so happy.”

“Kara from middle school? That Kara?”

“Yeah.” Denise smiled dreamily. “She was hot. Too bad she went to a different high school.”
