Maria draws her shawl closer around her shoulders. Her cough has returned again this winter; her recovery is slower each time, and her hope dwindles. She has pleaded for news of Simon, of their child, but her father always refuses.
While she was still pregnant, she gave her old nurse a miniature portrait, painted for a betrothal that never came to pass. “Giovanna, promise me! If I am separated from my child, give them this.”
Maria’s daughter will know her face, know that her mother loves her. She will grow up free, not in the cold palace of the Fieschi.
