“I must ask you to stand down! This is most improper!”
I tugged at my arm, which the captain of the guard was firmly gripping. “There’s no incongruity involved in the situation! This is an emergency! I must see the King, and it cannot wait until morning!”
“Tell me the nature of this emergency.” His grip tightened, as his eyes narrowed. “Then I’ll judge it. If I agree, then I’ll escort you personally.”
“There’s no time to spare,” I protested, still trying to pull free. When he didn’t let go, I heaved a sigh. “Very well; since you insist. Some unknown fiend has released all of the prisoners, and they’ve formed a rebel faction. They’re determined to wipe out the royalty. Who would do such a thing, to set loose a criminal mob?! How could they stoop so low?! If I could get my hands on the ones responsible--”
“Perhaps they’re closer than you think.” The captain grinned slowly, a dark glint in his eyes.
“I see,” I whispered, staring at him. It felt like some terrible enchantment had fallen away, and I was seeing the true nature of the man. “Then you’re the party who did something so treacherous. That’s how the prisoners were freed; no one would question you--”
“Not if I claimed to be following orders directly given by His Majesty,” the captain confirmed. He pulled a dagger from his belt. “As it happens, I find myself inclined to agree with you,” he continued, lifting the blade so that its point rested at my throat. The other hand, still clutching my arm, began to drag me along, in the direction of the dungeons. “This is, indeed, an emergency situation. And it must play out as intended. I feel like sparing your life, but kept hidden silently away.”
